The bakarwal is an indigenous breed of himalayan origin and was bred extensively by the Nomadic muslim group called"GUJJARS"to protect their livestock from predators like wolves and bears.local names: gujjar watch dog,kashmir sheep dog,bakarwal Mastiff
this breed belong to the variety of Asian molossers,the gujjar watch dog is some how related to the Tibetan Mastiff and the dogs of the central Asia.Gujjar herdsmen claimed that to be much older than any other breed of the region.while this is debatable,the black and tan coloring the physical build of the dog have led some authorities to link a number of old molosser to this breed which named Hyrcanian Mastiff,the molosser tis epirou,the Tuvan sheepDog,the variety of iranian sage mazandarani and to some extent EUROPEAN descendants of these breeds.
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE:
DEEP chested muscular and agile,the kashmiri sheep dog has a straight back ,broad shoulders and long legs.the body is strongly boned with a powerful neck and large head the medium length flat coat is very thick and densely undercoated providing suitable protection from the harsh conditions of the area and also from the predators for themselves.the most common color is black...while there are tricolored and piebald examples also, a variety of sizes can be encountered from specimens that are 24 inches tall to those exceeds 30 inches at the withers
